
The reason we go to school is to do well in life. As a result, no one would want to go to school without a vision of doing well. In this article, I want to share with you four important school relationships to have and maintain in order to excel.
Read this if you want to know how to be an excellent student and still have all the time to serve God.
WHY ARE THESE RELATIONSHIPS IMPORTANT?
They have benefits during school:
There are several benefits you will get when you form these important school relationships. Some of them are:
- You will end up with good grades if you form these important school relationships.
- It will ensure you graduate on time.
- Their advice and networks will help you meet the right people for your life, so, do well to cultivate the relationship.
- You get free advice others do not have privy to if you engage in these important school relationships.
They have benefits after school:
The benefits of these important school relationships aren’t just for your school duration because they can also profit you after school. Let’s look at some of these benefits.
- Recommendations for grad school.
- Recommendations to get a job.
- Help secure your OPT with ease.
ACADEMIC ADVISOR
Your Academic advisor plans your classes, recommends classes etc. You can mistakenly take classes you shouldn’t take and this may delay your graduation because you took classes you shouldn’t. For this reason, your relationship with your academic advisor is one of the very important school relationships to have.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADVISOR
This advisor shows you what to do to stay in status with immigration. This is very important if you are an international student. Always ensure from them whether you are in status every semester.
PROFESSORS
You will need your professors to give you recommendations. They also open doors for you to find jobs and interviews and help with grad school. Professors have very good connections to jobs and schools so if you have a good relationship with them, they will go a long way to help.
PASTOR
Your pastor feeds you with all knowledge to build every aspect of your life. So, it is important that you do not take them for granted. Moreover, I am a testimony of having a good pastor in your life. Jeremiah 3:15; Psalm 23:1.
DO THESE EVERY SEMESTER: SET AN AGENDA FOR EVERY MEETING WITH THESE 4 PERSONS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER.

Go to them with these important questions:
ACADEMIC ADVISOR
- Am I on track to finish at my graduation date? Pls verify.
- Can I have my schedule to keep?
- Ask for a student above you in your major in your area who can mentor you and connect to them because this is very helpful
- Find out about any venues for your classes if you aren’t sure because this will save you a lot of unnecessary hustle.
- Get them anything nice from your country which is not expensive (less than 20$)
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADVISOR
- Am I in status with USCIS?
- Am I supposed to do anything related to not taking classes this summer?
- Update them of any impending internships so that a CPT can be prepared for you
- Ask for a student above you in your area who can mentor you
- Get them anything nice from your country which is not expensive (less than 20$)
Things to note:
- You aren’t allowed to take semesters off and stay in the country. Instead, Let your advisor know and fill the vacation form
- You can’t work outside campus till after 2 semesters. It’s usually non-negotiable by immigration
- You need Curriculum Practical Training (CPT) for internships. It’s for 1 year. So, ensure that you exhaust it
- You need OPT to work after graduation or during school hours. It’s 1 year and additional 2 years for STEM
PROFESSORS:
- Thank them for a good class whether you get A or B.
- Ask for recommendations for another class

PASTOR:
- Let him pray for you every semester and anoint you with oil because the anointing will ensure you are protected and excelling in all you do.
- Involve yourself in the work of God. As a result, it will draw more blessings into your life.
SUMMARY:
We have now seen the most important relationships to have in school. These are:
- Your academic advisor
- The International Student Advisor
- Professors
- Your Pastor.
As a student, you must ensure you nurture these relationships while in school because they will greatly profit you. They also have good benefits after school.
