Being able to start and keep conversations for long does not come easily for everyone, especially introverts. Today, I am going to share with you some practical ways we can use to start and keep a conversation for a long period.
Why is this important?
When you go through the scriptures, there are 59 scriptures about “one another” signaling that our daily walk with God involves others in the household. This means that our identity in Christ is tied to one another. Therefore, being able to start and keep conversations going goes a long way to help us maintain good relationships with each other.
Secondly, after God had created everything, He said, “It is not good for man to be alone.” This simply means that we were created for relationships: with God and men.
How To Start and Keep Conversations for a long time.
At this point, you do not have to worry whether you are an introvert. This is no excuse because as you go through life, and as an example, if you have people looking up to you for decisions and leadership, you have no option than to become a people person. And this involves being able to start and keep conversations going.
Pray for boldness
“After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”Acts 4:31 NIV
The scriptures affirm that the righteous shall be as bold as a lion. But boldness does not just happen. It is something we’ve got to pray for. The apostle Paul practiced this. He asked for people to pray for him in Ephesians 6:19, “that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel”.
Perhaps, we could see here one important secret to Paul’s fearlessness when it came to preaching the gospel: He prayed for boldness.
To sum it up, pray for boldness so that you can start and keep conversations for a long time.
The Holy Spirit fills you with boldness
Right from Acts 4:31, which we read earlier, we see the source of this boldness. It says that “they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.” Boldness comes when you are filled with the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we need to invest time in fellowship with God. When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, He will help you to start and keep conversations for long.
If you are reading this and you do not have a relationship with Jesus, I will recommend you making that decision and you will not regret it.
Be willing to share your life and be real
“A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”Proverbs 18:24 NKJV
You need to be friendly. How do you do that? The answer is, you must be willing to share your life with others. If you are unable to cultivate friendships it could probably be that you are also holding back a little bit.
You have to let others enjoy the wholesomeness that comes from the Spirit of God who indwells you. So, if they share something little about themselves, you must also share a little about yourself. This is also a key ingredient in being able to start and keep conversations for long.
Ask the Holy Spirit for a verse in mind
“For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.””Luke 12:12 NKJV
Do not underestimate this. It is important to ask for the help of the Holy Spirit with a verse or a thought anytime you are about to start a conversation with somebody. Ask, “Lord, what do you want me to tell this person,” and believe for an answer.
Personally, I always ask God when I wake up in the morning, “Lord, what verse do you want me to share with anyone I talk to today?” And before long, He will point me to a verse which will also encourage whoever I share it with.
This is a good prayer to pray which will help you to start and keep conversations for long.
Prepare with these background questions
Prepare with some background questions. I use the mnemonic “SPEAK” to help me keep a conversation for a long time. These are 5 questions that can be endless and foundational in your conversations.
Let’s look at them closely:
Story – What is your story so far? It’s like being asked: tell me more about yourself.
Passion – What motivates you? If the world could remember you for one thing, what would it be?
Encouragement – Do you know what you would be good at? Take advantage here and motivate the person when you get the opportunity. This is where your scripture for the day can come in.
Assistance – How Can I help you? There are a lot of ways you can help. You can point them to people who can help or help them if you can do it yourself.
Knowledge – What do you know that I need to know? Here you can ask a lot of questions about their field or area of work or career.
When you practice these things, you will realize that there is so much you can talk about. Do not forget that you should be willing to share something about you. As a result, the person you are talking with will also be encouraged to share more with you.
